Well, there are several ways to earn money while traveling but only a few of them are convenient and require less effort. The internet has transformed most of the businesses online and it has changed traveling culture altogether. Usually, in the past, travelers used to hitchhike and explore but at the moment, we’ve travelers that make money on the go meeting their travel and lifestyle expenses.
I, being a traveller have tried some ways to make enough money to live a better lifestyle and explore the world at the same time. I found out that making money on the internet is most convenient and it made me a lot of money, I’ll talk about this in detail later on.
There’s no doubt, traveling is expensive and it costs a lot of money. But when you make more money, expenses aren’t a headache anymore.
Coming to the question, here are some of the ways to earn money on the go. I’ve implemented most of them while some of them are based on fellow travelers’ suggestions:
#1. Building Digital Asset – A Travel Blog
You might have seen a motivational speech where the concept of ‘making money while you sleep’ was described. This concept becomes a reality when you’ve got a digital asset; the one that relies on the internet. Blogging is a great example of a digital asset which lets you make money traveling.
Several blog monetization options are available, here are a few of them:
- Banner Ads: As soon as your blog starts getting hits, you can publish a page with the title ‘advertise on my blog’. In that page, describe the per banner charges (monthly) and don’t forget to put your analytics screenshots. Advertisers will get in touch and start paying monthly. If you find it difficult to get direct sponsors for banner ads, signup with ad platforms like Adsense or BuySellAds.
- Affiliate Marketing: We all know how easy it is to book an air ticket or a customized tour online. This is possible just due to modern web apps. Making money through affiliate marketing involves referring your blog readers to book tickets or trips through your affiliate links or widgets. From Airbnb to Booking.com, all top booking sites have their online affiliate programs. Signup for them, activate their widgets/banners on your blog and that’s it. As soon as any of your blog reader makes a booking, you get paid through commissions. In a similar way, Amazon affiliate is there for recommending traveling equipment. You can share your traveling gadgets and make money letting your readers make purchases through your affiliate links.
- Develop your own product: It can be time taking but making courses, writing ebooks and travel guides can help you make money with your blog. All you need is consistency in crafting your own products and then as you promote them across your blog, you can make money. You can sell courses on Udemy and ebooks on Amazon KDP. Or you can just go to Fiverr.com and get things done for 5$ by someone else.
#2. Vlogging – a YouTube Channel
Vlogging is another great way to earn money while traveling. Similar to a blog, it is also an example of a digital asset.
Just make use of your camera to tell stories and share experiences about your journeys and upload it on YouTube. It’s that simple!
About Money, you can use YouTube partner program that pays through AdSense. In addition, you can promote traveling gadgets within your video (place your affiliate links in description).
#3. Freelance Your Skills
Freelancing is yet another legit way to make money travelling. I have been providing writing services to several blogs. No doubt, if you’ve more in-demand skills you can make $$$$ or more.
If you choose to freelance as your side hustle during travel, make sure you owe it consistent hours unless it gets messy. Just polish a skill that is in-demand, signup for top freelance marketplaces like Fiverr, Upwork, or PoeplePerHour and start bidding. Make sure you provide value to each customer that agrees to work with you, build long term relationships and make money. A reminder, go for freelancing only if you can invest proper time.
#4. Selling Photos on Shutterstock
If you’re in love with photography and capture great moments, this is the way to go. Shutterstock has paid over a half-billion dollars to the creators for their work. You can upload photos, videos, and vectors and as soon as someone downloads your work, you make money. Who would say no to making money by just uploading (great) photos?
#4. Teaching Online
Teaching online is a very convenient way to make good bucks. You don’t require specialization in any specific subjects to continue, you can teach your native language i.e., English, too. Just head over to eslcafe.com and apply for English tutor positions and you’ll be surprised to see interview requests. If you’re looking for some quick and convenient method to earn money, this is the way to go!
#5. Street Performing
If you’re an artist with dancing or singing skills, street performance can help you make enough money to travel. Make sure you don’t break the country’s law and you’re free to perform in any corner. If you don’t mind showing your skills to the public, you’ll love to perform anywhere and get paid by locals.
#6. Day-Trading
Day Trading works fine only if you’ve spent some great time analyzing the markets. A few fellow travelers like Marcello from Wanderingtrader.com are doing day-trading to make money traveling. This technique requires no effort, but it isn’t recommended for everyone.
If you’re looking forward to doing it with no experience, go for trade coaching classes first and then dive in the world of day-trading.
Wrapping Up:
If someone asks me for the best strategy, I would recommend blogging and vlogging together. This way, you build two streams of income.
I’ve been traveling around for quite a long time and found digital assets to be the only convenient way to earn money. Whether it is a YouTube channel, a quality course or a travel blog, there’s no limit to the money you make.
If you’re technical enough for this digital stuff, doing short jobs in hotels, restaurants, or ships are some of the options available.
